By Julie Grimstad, President of HALO

Over the course of 35 years as a pro-life patient advocate, I have seen, been told, or read about many, many cases of imposed death (euthanasia by both omission and act). By now, I should be hardened. Thank God, I am not, as this case proves. I wept as I read “A Grim New Meaning to ‘Last Supper’” by Donald DeMarco, Crisis Magazine, March 12, 2020. [1]

As you read this, keep in mind that euthanasia is legal throughout Canada. Alex Schadenberg, Executive Director of the Euthanasia Prevention Coalition, reported in January, “Approximately 5000 Canadians died by euthanasia in 2019 and 13,000 since legalization” [in 2016]. [2]

Mr. DeMarco reports, “The March 7 issue of the Toronto Star—ironically, in its lifestyle section—features the account of a 95-year-old mother who was euthanized with the approval of her children.” Here is a brief retelling of this horrific story.

The Eve Before “Mum” Was Euthanized

A party was given the night before “Mum” was killed, to honor her. It was attended by her four children and four of her six grandchildren. The festivities were interrupted when the public health nurse arrived to insert the shunts through which the lethal injections would be delivered. The woman’s doctor, who had cared for her for more than 10 years, had refused to “assist” her death. Her caregiver protested to her daughter, “Don’t do this. This isn’t what she wants. She is too sick to know.”

Misgivings Didn’t Stop Them

The daughter questioned herself, “Am I hastening my own mother’s death? Am I a horrible person? What will people think? Surely I’ll feel guilty afterwards.”

Nevertheless, this woman’s imposed death was carried out on schedule. The euphemism for this act is MAID (Medical Assistance in Dying). The word “killing” is too harsh for tender ears. “You shall not kill” is indeed a bluntly worded commandment. It sears our consciences.
